One of the most famous and popular of all Australian films, Bruce Beresford's Breaker Morant is based on the Boer War court martial of three Carbineers:: an adventurer, Harry 'Breaker' Morant (Woodward) and two young Australians, Handcock (Brown) and Witton (Fitzgerald).
The feature won Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Thompson) Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Brown), Best Cinematography (Don McAlpine), Best Original Screenplay, Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design at the 1980 AFI Awards and Jack Thompson won Best Supporting Actor award at the 1980 Cannes Film Festival.
“Breaker Morant will be remembered as an incisive examination of the moral ambiguity inherent in any war. This is superb drama. Woodward made the Breaker a man haunted by the idea of what he may have become in the process of fighting the enemy. No one else could have made such an heroic and yet tragic modern character come to life … Edward made him his own and he made him unforgettable.” - Leah Krevit
