When I was a kid growing up in WA, I remember many sports stars used to travel to the country. They were very proud to represent this nation and all us kids suddenly were compelled to wear the green and gold. Musicians and bands used to tour to get their sound out and we then picked up a guitar thinking we were the next Cold Chisel. Even artists who had painted our great land used to have exhibitions from town to town hall and suddenly this huge landscape seemed to be filled with endless opportunities for a little kid from the country.
The beauty of the Big Screen tour is that movies and filmmaking seem to hold a mystique - and I hope we can shatter that. Filmmaking is just a job. Our job is to entertain. And if we are lucky, we touch people and sometimes open up hearts and minds. Big Screen gets our stories out. Stories about us, our everchanging identity, about the beauty of this country, about our history and our future, hopes, fears and love.
And maybe another little kid can see our country and himself represented and realise making movies is a possibility, not a dream - and something to be proud of. - Sam Worthington |
